Pal Nam of Assam: A Traditional Devotional Celebration. পাল নাম. Srimanta Sankar Dev.
A group of devotees sings the traditional devotional song Pal Nam continuously for several days, with the 3-day format being particularly popular in Assam.
According to the “Sarit Puthi,” Sreemanta Sankardev started this format of the Kirtan in 1528. During Pal Nam, devotees sing devotional hymns of Lord Sri Krishna and recite different hymns from the Hindu Sastras.
The Vaishnab Community observes this celebration all over Assam with full enthusiasm, traditional devotion, and rituals.
The main objective of Pal Nam is to foster devotion, peace, and harmony within the community. Notable locations for Pal Nam celebrations in Assam include Belsor, Chamata, Na Satra of Sarthabari, Auniati Satra of North Guwahati, Garmur Satra of Majuli, Barpeta Satra, and Dhekiya Khowa Bor Namghar. Additionally, the villagers in Namghar observe it on a smaller scale all over Assam.
During Pal Nam, devotees offer traditional items to light ghee lamps and incense, creating a positively charged atmosphere. Thousands of people gather in November or December for this spectacular event in the Satras of Assam, making it a grand spiritual celebration. They celebrate this event according to the Hindu Panjika.
Devotees play Bhor Taal and Khol alongside singing, enriching Pal Nam’s cultural significance. This practice adds to the cultural richness and significance of Pal Nam.
