North Guwahati is rapidly emerging as a major growth corridor of Assam. The inauguration of the Kumar Bhaskar Varma Setu over the Brahmaputra River has started a new era. It enhances connectivity and fosters development. This bridge represents more than just an infrastructure project. It proudly carries the name of one of Assam’s greatest historical rulers — Kumar Bhaskar Varma.
Who Was Kumar Bhaskar Varma?
Kumar Bhaskar Varma, also known as Bhaskaravarman, ruled the powerful Kamarupa Kingdom during the 7th century CE (around 600–650 CE). He belonged to the Varman (Barman) dynasty, one of the earliest ruling dynasties of ancient Assam.

He established his capital at Pragjyotishpur. Historians widely identify it with present-day Guwahati and its surrounding regions. This includes parts of North Guwahati. Through strong leadership, he transformed Kamrup into a politically powerful kingdom. His strategic vision made it culturally vibrant and strategically important in early medieval India.
A Visionary Political Leader
Kumar Bhaskar Varma strengthened his kingdom by forming a diplomatic alliance with the North Indian emperor Harshavardhana. Through this strategic partnership, he enhanced Assam’s political influence and secured stability for his kingdom.

International Recognition: Xuanzang’s Visit
The famous Chinese Buddhist monk Xuanzang (Hiuen Tsang) visited Kamarupa during his reign. In his travel records, Xuanzang described the king as intelligent and cultured. He praised the administration for its organization and efficiency. He also noted that the people were disciplined and educated.

These international records gave this legendary King global recognition. They made him one of the earliest internationally documented rulers of Assam.
Connection to North Guwahati
In ancient times, North Guwahati and the greater Guwahati region formed part of the Kamarupa Kingdom. The Brahmaputra River played a central role in trade, governance, and communication during Kumar Bhaskar Varma’s reign.
Today, the Kumar Bhaskar Varma Setu physically connects Guwahati and North Guwahati. The bridge symbolizes unity, progress, and continuity. The bridge is named after this legendary King. This honors a ruler who united Assam politically and culturally centuries ago.
