Importance Of North Guwahati

The area of present-day North Guwahati formed an important part of the Kamarupa kingdom. Its location along the northern bank of the Brahmaputra River gave the kingdom strategic control over transportation, communication, and defence. By securing this region, Maharaja Prithu strengthened the kingdom’s ability to resist outside attacks.

War with Bakhtiyar Khiliji

At the same time, Muhammad Bakhtiyar Khalji expanded his power across eastern India. After conquering large parts of Bihar and Bengal, he launched military campaigns that damaged important centers of learning, including Nalanda. Encouraged by his earlier successes, he led an expedition toward the northeast and attempted to push through Kamarupa on his way toward Tibet.

Maharaja Prithu organized the defense of his kingdom and prepared his forces to confront the invaders. He used the rivers, forests, and difficult terrain of Assam to his advantage. His soldiers challenged the invading army and disrupted its movement through the region. As the campaign continued, Bakhtiyar Khalji’s forces faced growing shortages of supplies and increasing resistance from local defenders.

Kamrupa Kingdom

The defenders of Kamarupa weakened the invading army and forced it into retreat. During the withdrawal, the invaders suffered heavy losses. The failure of the campaign ended Bakhtiyar Khalji’s ambitions in the region and protected Kamarupa from foreign domination.

Through his leadership and determination, Maharaja Prithu helped preserve Assam’s independence. His actions demonstrated the strength of Kamarupa and the resilience of its people. Today, many people in Assam honor him as a symbol of courage, patriotism, and resistance against invasion. His legacy continues to connect the histories of Kamarupa, North Guwahati, and one of the most important defensive victories in northeastern India.
