Key Traditions of Uruka

  1. Community Feast (Bhoj)
    • Assamese People traditionally prepared dishes like masor tenga (sour fish curry), haah mangxo (duck meat), and xandoh guri (rice flour dish). People also make sweets like pitha (rice cakes) and laru (sweet coconut balls) to celebrate the occasion.
    • People cook food in open-air chulhas (earthen stoves) using firewood, which adds a rustic flavor to the dishes.
  2. Bhelaghar: The Temporary Huts
    • Young men build Bhelaghars, temporary huts made of bamboo, banana leaves, and hay.

    • After the Meji burning, families sit together for a grand Assamese breakfast with doi-sira (curd and flattened rice), xandoh, til pitha, narikol laru, sunga saul (sticky rice cooked in bamboo), and gur (jaggery).

    • Buffalo fights are less common today. It was a major attraction in certain parts of Assam.
