This is one of the most vibrant festivals of Assam. It is culturally rich and celebrated primarily by the Mising (Mishing) tribal community. The festival marks the beginning of the agricultural season. It is dedicated to Mother Earth. People pray for prosperity, a good harvest, and community harmony.
It is observed every year on the first Wednesday of the Assamese month of Phagun (February–March).

Meaning of the Name “Ali Aye Ligang”

The name ‘Ali Aye Ligang’ comes from the Mising language:

  • Ali → Seeds
  • Aye → Fruits
  • Ligang → To sow or to begin planting

Together, it symbolizes the commencement of sowing seeds, especially paddy.


Historical & Cultural Importance

The Mising community is one of the major ethnolinguistic groups in Assam. They have a deep connection to rivers, forests, and agriculture.

1. Commencement of Sowing (Gumrag Ritual)

The day begins with the sowing of seeds in the fields. Elders conduct traditional rituals, praying for:
