
Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma [CM Assam]
Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma is the 15th Chief Minister of Assam.
He first won election to the Assam Legislative Assembly from Jalukbari Assembly Constituency in 2001. And has since been re-elected five times from the same constituency.
From 2002 to 2021, he held several portfolios, including Minister of State for Agriculture, Planning & Development, Finance, Health, Education, and Assam Accord Implementation.
He earned a Ph.D. degree in Political Science from Gauhati University.
He envisions the welfare of the people in Jalukbari and has plans to develop a sports complex, a cultural complex, and a hospital.
What are his achievements as a minister?
Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma has achieved many things as a minister in various departments of the Government of Assam. Some of his achievements are:
Schemes
He introduced several schemes and reforms in the Finance department. Such as the Asom Mala scheme for road development. The Arundhati scheme for providing gold to brides. The Orunodoi scheme for providing financial assistance to poor families. And the Swami Vivekananda Youth Empowerment Yojana for providing loans to entrepreneurs.
Health service
He improved the health infrastructure and services in the state by setting up new medical colleges, hospitals, cancer care centers, and ambulance services. He also launched several health schemes such as Atal Amrit Abhiyan for providing free treatment to low-income families. Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana for providing health insurance to poor families. And Sneha Sparsha for providing financial assistance to children with critical illnesses.
Education in Assam
He revamped the education sector by appointing more than 50,000 teachers through TET exams. Abolishing the system of interviews, regularizing the services of contractual teachers. Providing free textbooks and uniforms to students, waiving off admission fees and exam fees for students up to degree level. Establishing new universities and colleges, and launching schemes such as Anundoram Borooah Award for meritorious students and Pragyan Bharati for providing scooters to girl students.
Assam Accord implementation
He played a key role in implementing the Assam Accord of 1985. That accord was signed between the Government of India and the leaders of the Assam Movement to end the six-year-long agitation against illegal immigration. He also led the negotiations with various militant groups. Such as ULFA, NDFB, KPLT, and Adivasi Cobra Militants to bring them into mainstream politics and restore peace and harmony in the state.
Political
He was instrumental in strengthening the BJP’s presence and influence in the North-East region by forming the North-East Democratic Alliance (NEDA). A coalition of regional parties under the leadership of BJP. He also campaigned extensively for the BJP and its allies in various state elections and helped them win power in states such as Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Sikkim, and Tripura.
