Anandaram Borooah Biography
Anundoram Borooah, also known as A.R. Borooah, was a prominent Indian civil servant and social reformer. He was born on May 21, 1850, in North Guwahati, Rajaduwar, Assam, India, and passed away on January 19, 1889.
Borooah belonged to a well-known Assamese family of North Guwahati that had a rich legacy of public service. He completed his education at Cotton Collegiate in Guwahati and then pursued further studies at Presidency College in Kolkata (formerly Calcutta). He excelled academically and earned a degree in Literature.
In 1872, Borooah joined the Indian Civil Service (ICS) and began his career as a civil servant. He held various important administrative positions in different parts of British India. However, his true calling lay in social work and public service, and he devoted himself to uplifting the marginalized and underprivileged sections of society.
The welfare of tea garden laborers, who were often subjected to exploitative working conditions, was actively pursued by Borooah.
He advocated for their rights, better working conditions, and access to education and healthcare. He also played a significant role in the development of Assam’s education system.
