
Lachit Borphukan was a prominent military commander from the Ahom kingdom of Assam, India. He lived during the late 17th century.
Renowned for resisting the Mughal forces during the Ahom-Mughal conflicts, he displayed exceptional leadership and bravery.

Biography
Lachit was the son of Momai Tamuli Barbaruah. Known for efficiency and ebullience, he inherited many of her admirable qualities. He was a contemporary of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, the great Maratha ruler who fought against the Mughal Empire in the Deccan region.

As a leader, Lachit possessed several exceptional qualities that made him stand out. His determination and confidence were evident in his military campaigns. He showed great courage and ambition in his pursuit of defending his kingdom from Mughal aggression. Lachit was firm in executing his plans and had a strong sense of self-respect.
One of Lachit’s outstanding traits was his willingness to undertake physically demanding tasks even when he was suffering from ill health. He had a deep sense of initiative and the ability to inspire and lead his soldiers even during critical moments of battle.
Furthermore, Lachit’s decisiveness and readiness to take bold actions when necessary were key factors in his success as a military commander. He demonstrated strict leadership by executing his maternal uncle for negligence in carrying out assigned duties. Which reflected his commitment to the cause and the discipline he expected from his subordinates.
Significance
Lachit Borphukan’s most significant contribution came during the Battle of Saraighat in 1671. In this historic battle, he led the Ahom forces against the mighty Mughal army under the command of Ram Singh-I. Lachit’s strategic brilliance and unyielding spirit led the Ahom forces to a remarkable victory. Despite facing overwhelming odds, they prevented the Mughals from conquering Assam. Lachit’s leadership played a pivotal role in this historic triumph.
