During a critical juncture in the nation’s history, the esteemed Ahom General, Lachit Borphukan, uttered a timeless proclamation: “Mama (mother brother) is not greater than the country.” [দেশতকৈ মামা ডাঙৰ নহয়] This momentous declaration occurred amidst a dire emergency, when the renowned Mughal General, Ram Singha, sought to conquer Assam. Determined to thwart the Mughal invasion, Lachit Borphukan commanded his forces to construct an embankment, fortifying the region against the advancing Mughals.

Despite the Mughals’ expertise in conventional warfare, the Ahom forces faced a challenge in combating them directly. Consequently, Lachit Borphukan devised a novel strategy: the construction of a formidable barrier known as a “Garh,” crafted from a combination of stone, bamboo, and soil. However, during the pivotal construction phase, Lachit’s maternal uncle assumed oversight. As exhaustion set in, the soldiers sought respite with their uncle’s permission, momentarily halting their labor.

मामा देश से बड़ा नहीं है

In the dead of night, Lachit conducted an inspection, only to discover his soldiers, including his uncle, asleep at their posts. Incensed by this negligence, he delivered his resolute decree: “Mama is not greater than the country.” Without hesitation, he executed his uncle, sending shockwaves through the ranks. Witnessing this decisive action, the soldiers swiftly resumed their duties, galvanized by their leader’s unwavering commitment to the cause.

By morning, when the Mughal forces arrived at the battleground of Saraighat, they were met with a sight that defied expectation: a sprawling embankment, erected overnight by the indomitable Ahom army. In the ensuing battle, Lachit and his forces exhibited unparalleled valor and strategic prowess, resulting in a resounding defeat for the Mughals.

Thus, the saga of Lachit Borphukan’s bravery and foresight stands as a testament to the unwavering resolve of the Ahom people in safeguarding their cherished motherland, Assam, from external threats.
