What are the main rivers of Assam?

There are numerous rivers in Assam but the main rivers are two, Brahmaputra and Barak. The rest are tributaries of these two main rivers. The Brahmaputra River originates from a glacier named ‘Tamsuk Khambar’ (about 31 degrees north equator and 42 degrees east longitude) located a little east of Manas Sarovar in the Himalayas and by different names it flows through Assam and falls into the Bay of Bengal.

Brahmaputra is the main River of Assam

The Brahmaputra is the lifeline of Assam and one of the major rivers in Asia. It enters Assam near Sadiya in the eastern part of the state and flows through its entire length, shaping the landscape and supporting agriculture and transportation.

River Brahmaputra

The Brahmaputra River is about 2,880 km long. The river flows through Assam for about 725 kilometers. Barak is another Ghai river in Assam. About 900 km long Barak River originates from the Naga Hills and flows through Manipur and enters the Cachar district and divides into two branches namely Surma and Kushiyara near Badarpur and enters Bangladesh. And finally, it joins the name Meghna and falls into the Brahmaputra (Padma).

The Barak River originates in the Barail range in Manipur and flows through southern Assam. It merges with the Surma River in Bangladesh to form the Meghna River. The Barak River is an important waterway and is significant for irrigation, hydroelectric projects, and fishing.

Subansiri River

The Subansiri River is a tributary of the Brahmaputra and is one of the largest rivers in Assam. It originates in Tibet, enters Arunachal Pradesh, and then flows through Assam before joining the Brahmaputra.

Jia Bharali River

The Jia Bharali River is another important tributary of the Brahmaputra. It originates in the Himalayas, enters Assam, and flows through the districts of Sonitpur and Nagaon.

Manas River

The Manas River originates in Bhutan and enters Assam in the district of Baksa. It is a transboundary river and forms a natural border between India and Bhutan. The Manas River is known for its rich biodiversity and is a part of the UNESCO World Heritage site, Manas National Park.

Dhansiri River

The Dhansiri River is a tributary of the Brahmaputra and flows through the districts of Golaghat and Sonitpur in Assam. It originates in Nagaland and forms a part of the northeastern boundary of the Kaziranga National Park.
