Assam Hornet Vespa

“Kodo Barol” or “Hornet Vespa” typically refers to a specific species of hornet known as Vespa velutina, commonly known as the Asian giant hornet. This species is the largest hornet in India and is native to various parts of Asia, including India, Nepal, Bhutan, Myanmar, Japan, Korea, China, and some surrounding regions.

Scientific and Local Name

Vespa velutina nigrithorax is the scientific name of the Asian hornet. It is mainly found in Assam and the northeastern region of India. In the local Assamese language, it is called “Kodo Barol” (কোডো বৰল / कोदो बरल).

“कोदो बरल” असम और भारत के पूर्वोत्तर क्षेत्र में पाई जाती है। यह एक विशेष प्रकार की चींटी है जिसका आकार और रंग अन्य प्रकार की चींटियों से थोड़ा अलग हो सकता है। कोदो बरल के पुंछ आमतौर पर बड़े होते हैं और इसका डंडा भी प्रबल होता है।

यह जीव अपनी आक्रामक प्रवृत्ति और महत्वपूर्ण डंड के लिए प्रसिद्ध है। कोदो बरल अकेले या समूह में रह सकते हैं और आमतौर पर अपने घरों को पेड़ों पर बनाते हैं। इनकी दानें और उनका प्रवृत्तिक आचरण पूर्वोत्तर भारत के जंगलों में महत्वपूर्ण भूमिका निभाते हैं और इनका प्रकृति और जीवनशैली का अध्ययन वैज्ञानिकों के लिए महत्वपूर्ण है।

The appearance of the Asian Hornet

Vespa velutina is significantly smaller than the European hornet. Typically, queens are 30 mm in length and males are 24 mm. They have a distinctive orange or yellowish head, prominent compound eyes, and strong mandibles. Their thorax is brownish-black, and their abdomen displays alternating dark and yellow or brown bands.
