The new complex is envisioned as a comprehensive judicial township. It aims to address long-standing infrastructure limitations. The Gauhati High Court faces these limitations at its existing Uzan Bazar campus.

Large-Scale Judicial Township Project

The Assam Cabinet approved the project with an initial allocation of approximately ₹478 crore. The judicial township will be developed on about 129 bighas of land at Rangamahal. This area is more than 42 acres. It is located on the northern bank of the Brahmaputra River.

Officials stated that the project focuses on creating a future-ready and expandable judicial ecosystem. It is capable of serving Assam’s growing legal and administrative needs for decades.

Modern Facilities and Integrated Design

The new Gauhati High Court complex will house a modern multi-storey High Court building. It will have spacious courtrooms, judges’ chambers, registry offices, and administrative sections. The master plan includes separate buildings for the Bar Association and the chambers of advocates. This plan addresses the space shortages faced by legal professionals.

Authorities have planned interconnected buildings, internal roads, and walkways to ensure seamless movement across the campus. The complex will also provide:

  • Public waiting areas
  • Record and archival rooms
  • Conference halls
  • Security infrastructure
  • Parking facilities for judges, advocates, staff, and litigants
  • Landscaped open spaces

Strategic Shift to North Guwahati

The government selected Rangamahal in North Guwahati to overcome expansion constraints at the existing High Court premises in central Guwahati. Officials cited traffic congestion, limited parking, and a lack of scope for modernization as key challenges at the current location.

The new site offers sufficient space for planned growth. It aligns with the state’s broader vision of balanced urban development across both banks of the Brahmaputra.

Mixed Response from Legal Fraternity

The proposed relocation of the Gauhati High Court has drawn mixed reactions from members of the legal community. The Gauhati High Court Bar Association expressed concerns regarding daily commuting challenges, accessibility, and transport infrastructure.

Some members of the Bar staged peaceful protests and hunger strikes in recent weeks. However, government representatives and legal authorities maintained that the new complex would significantly improve court functioning. It would also enhance infrastructure. The existing campus cannot support these improvements.

Boost to North Guwahati’s Growth

Officials believe the judicial township will significantly enhance the administrative and economic profile of North Guwahati. The project is expected to generate employment, boost local businesses, and improve civic infrastructure in the region.

Urban planners see the development as a catalyst for long-term growth. It positions North Guwahati as a key administrative and judicial hub in Assam.

Looking Ahead

The government has assured that it will focus on transport connectivity. It also plans phased implementation. Digital integration will be included. This includes e-courts and online record management. These efforts aim to ensure smooth functioning of the new complex.
