Aswaklanta Devalaya

Aswaklanta Devalaya North Guwahati-Archaeological Site & Tourist Place. It consists of two big temples.

According to legend, Lord Krishna’s horse grew tired in this place as he approached to slay Narakasura.

Formally there was a Kunda, a place of sacrifice near the temple. The river Brahmaputra eroded this Kunda, and it no longer exists.

Inside this temple, there are two images one of Janardana and the other of Anantasai Vishnu. The latter is a fine art specimen of the eleventh century. There is one stone inscription on the body of the temple located in North Guwahati.

Regular ferry services connect it with the south bank, and you can access it by road across the Saraighat bridge.

Myths of Aswaklanta Devalaya

Ancient Heritage Historical Monuments of North Guwahati Assam

Myth.1

There are three myths about the coinage of the term ‘Aswaklanta‘.

In the ‘Purans,’ it is mentioned as the one-time resting place where Lord Krishna’s tired horses rested. During the battle with King ‘Narakasur,’ the horse carrying Lord Krishna’s chariot became fatigued and took rest here.

As a result, traces of horses and the footprint of Lord Krishna (Bishnu Pada) remained in the lower part of the eastern side of the ‘Aswaklanta’ hills.

Myth.2

The second myth says that Lord Krishna with his chariot enjoyed rest here when his horse grew tired in returning to ‘Dwaraka’ from ‘Kundil Nagar’ with ‘Ruhmini Devi’.

Myth.3

The third legend informs us that the horses belonged to ‘Arjun,’ the great ‘Pandava’ and friend of Krishna, and Lord Krishna persuaded ‘Arjun’ to stay back from the battlefield so that ‘Abhimanyu’ could be targeted and killed.

The great earthquake in 1897 resulted in the ruination of the ancient temple, and in 1901, a new temple came into existence under the patronage of Lord ‘Kurzon.’
