Bulbuli bird fights, also known as “Bulbuli Maar” is a traditional form of bird fighting that takes place in the northeastern state of Assam, India.

Trainers typically capture two male Bulbuli birds from the wild and pit them against each other in a small bamboo ring during the fights. In some parts of Assam, people consider these fights a popular form of rural entertainment.

Bulbuli birds, scientifically known as Pycnonotus cafer, are small, aggressive passerine birds that are native to the Indian subcontinent.

Their melodious song and territorial behavior are well-known.

In Bulbuli bird fights, trainers encourage the birds to engage in aggressive behavior toward each other, including pecking, flapping wings, and vocalizing.

The fights usually take place during the breeding season, which typically occurs from March to July when the male Bulbuli birds are more territorial and aggressive. Spectators gather around the bamboo ring to watch the birds compete against each other.

People may place bets on the outcome of the fights, adding an element of gambling to the event.

During the Bihu festival, bird owners and enthusiasts gather together to showcase the strength, agility, and fighting skills of their pet birds, particularly the Red-vented bulbuls.

Trainers train these bulbuls to engage in mock fights, attracting spectators who come to witness the spectacle and place bets on the outcomes.
