A Glimpse into History

Rawal Jaisal Singh, the ruler of the Bhati Rajput clan, built Jaisalmer Fort in 1156 AD.Builders positioned the fort on Trikuta Hill.
It served as a strategic lookout over ancient trade routes. These routes linked India with Central Asia and Persia. Over time, it became a symbol of Rajput strength and stood resilient through wars and dynastic changes.

Architectural Grandeur

  • Constructed from golden-yellow sandstone, the fort beautifully blends into the desert landscape. It changes color with the sunlight. It glows golden at dawn and amber by dusk.
  • The fort has four massive gateways. These include Akhai Pol, Suraj Pol, Ganesh Pol, and Hawa Pol. Each represents the royal pride and defense mechanism of its era.
  • Inside the walls, the fort is a maze of royal palaces, courtyards, havelis, temples, and narrow lanes. All these structures are carved with extraordinary craftsmanship.
  • The architecture showcases a perfect fusion of Rajput and Islamic design. This makes it one of the finest examples of medieval Indian fort art.

A Living Fort

Unlike most historical forts, Jaisalmer Fort is still inhabited. Around 3,000 locals live within its walls, operating guesthouses, handicraft shops, and rooftop cafés. This makes it one of the world’s few living forts, where history breathes through everyday life.
Walking through the fort feels like stepping back in time. You can see sandstone walls and intricate balconies. The aroma of traditional Rajasthani food fills the air.
